Apparently, in the light novels, Firo and Ennis lived together for at least a year without so much as a closed-lipped kiss. And they eventually get married -- around 1980!
But anime!Ennis and book!Ennis might be a little different; at least in the show, Ennis seemed to be developing a personality and consciousness at a pretty fast clip.
