Day 3 – Your favorite Final Fantasy theme/song?

I generally like the music in FF games, and I recognize just how important the games' scores are to making the playing experience amazing. But for the life of me, I can only recall a handful of songs! Of the ones I can remember right now, my favorite is probably VIII's "Breezy (Balamb Town Theme)". I fell in love with Balamb Town when I first visited it with Squall and Quistis, in large part because I liked this song so much. It has a nice folksy twang that gave Balamb Town a solid sense of place. Granted, it can get really damn annoying if you listen to it too much, BUT HEY. Small fishing villages-turned-tourist destinations can grate on your nerves if you stay too long, so I'll just claim that the tune "stays true to the source material".

The crazy Latin chanting of "Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec" gets honorable mention for being awesome, while Dissidia's "Cosmos" gets a shout out for being strangely incongruent with the rest of the game.

Day 2 - What is your least favorite FF game?

Well, XIII sorta disappointed me, but I'm going to chalk that up to the fact that I put the game down for a year, and in the interim probably forgot some of the finer-but-necessary details that made the plot congeal. But XIII was pretty and awesome, and after I read the "Analysis and Speculation" section of my game guide, the plot makes much more sense. So I forgive it.

I didn't really dig XII's moral ambiguity, in so far as many of the people my party fights are heroic in their own way—for instance, Vayne heroically dissolves the Occuria's command of humanity's fate, and Vossler didn't really need to die, given that his plan was what our heroes end up doing anyways. But XII was incredible, so I forgive it, too.

For this question, I'm going to go back on my earlier "only mainline FF games count" and say that my least favorite FF game is the first Dissidia.

It isn't that it's a fighting game—I'm a-okay with that. And it isn't the lack of new characters or anything; the ensemble cast is amazing. The problem is, is that its sequel Dissidia Duodecim is such a better game. I resent that I invested as much time as I did, only to be introduced with a fighting experience that was so incredibly improved by its overhaul. More importantly, the writing and voice acting of the second game is by far and away better than the first, compounding my growing, retroactive disappointment in the first game.

(But the cover of the first game was reversible, so there is that.)

BUT THERE YOU HAVE IT. I have opinions and I'm not afraid to express them, Internet.

But first!
I think an explanation of my history with the Final Fantasy series is in order! )

Day 1 - What is your favorite FF game?

Welp, isn't that the million dollar question.

My favorite game is sort of a toss-up, and it really depends on what side of the bed I wake-up on. VIII is rapidly growing on me, but since I haven't finished it, I'm remiss in naming it my favorite. The same goes with Tactics, which has an amazing plot that I've only ever half-finished. Though I enjoyed them both, XII and XIII bothered me when it came to aspects of their plots. And as much as I want to say Dissidia Duodecim (SRSLY GUYS IT IS AWESOME), I've not finished it, nor is it probably considered a "core" FF game.

SO, with all of that in mind, I sorta have to go with FFX. And I'm okay with that, because 1) I genuinely liked X, and 2) alot of other people didn't, which in my mind makes my positive gaming experience that much more unique and special.

I know that Tidus gets a lot of hate, and I understand why. He's not really a badass, not like Cloud or Squall (or Jecht or Auron or Basch or Balthier). He uses humor, but not as well as Laguna. Jecht didn't pass along any of his ruggedly handsome genes, but did hang around long enough to pass along his emotional attachment issues, so Tidus ends up both emo and metro.

But haters gonna hate. I like Tidus. This is going to sound stupid, but in my mind, he's more... realistic, or at least more approachable, than other FF heroes. He's not an amazing warrior; he's a sports star who ends up in a fantastical world half empty, and he does right by the people he's with. And he's pretty stupid and he's frank and he's pretty naive and boy does he have daddy issues, but he's a good man, and I like him for that.

And the story isn't just about him. Outside of Kimahri, who I never really connected with, I thought that FFX's party was pitch perfect, with a good balance of abilities and personalities. And I totally called Lulu/Wakka. Totally. AND ALSO the plot ended up making sense and having some emotional umph to boot.

SO THERE. Maybe X really is my favorite? Now I really want to get around to finishing X-2.
